Folding furniture tends to be the kind that’s squared away and hidden when not in use. After all, that’s why they can compact into small piles and bundles. The Sudare line of furniture, on the other hand, decided to break the tradition, rendering itself in a form that can serve as room dividers and partitions in their folded form.
Designed by Japanese outfit Nendo for Sugita-Ace, it’s a set of folding outdoor furniture that’s meant for storing right in the open. When folded, they appear like Japanese sudare window blinds, making them ideal for simply resting on a railing or other edge surface in patios, verandas, and terraces.
Sudare consists of four pieces: a chair, a high-back chair, a lounger, and a dual-purpose table, each of which can fold into a stylish partition. The main piece in the set is the table, which can be adjusted in height to serve as a regular side table, a coffee table, or even a low-rise table for Japanese-style homes. All the pieces are made using multiple slats of wood held together by fabric, with the frames cut in sturdy metal. The wood is finished in a natural color, with the metal and fabric parts available in three finishes (white, blue or yellow).
When folded and used as a divider, one side looks like it’s purely sudare window blinds, although the backside reveals the folded structure, which allows the thing to stand upright on its own. It comes with a selection of accessories that can be mounted on the ends of the individual slats, including lamps, trays, and various types of containers for extra utility.
